Just another coffee shop in Davao.

Here's a promotional tarp I designed for La Core Cafe (formerly Twosome) - a newly-assumed coffee shop in Victoria Plaza compound. The owner who is a friend of mine asked me to re-brand the business to make it more lively with designs. I directed the photography session myself using my Lumix FZ50 camera one afternoon outside the cafe for a better natural light exposure.

I was told about the ambiance & concept that is something to look up to - feel the pacific scene while inside the city's busy streets.

They are located beside the Marco Polo Hotel along CM Recto St., Davao City.

Cubepixels found a new place. But not very far from the previous location. We are still inside the Wheels N' More compound in Bajada.

After roughly 3 weeks of renovation, we are done with the new setup - new pc's, network, and mini-graphics library for students with coffee and wifi =) - absolutely free (just bring your own laptop).

Special thanks to Outbound for the great job with my build-up sign installed inside the office.

So, what's inside the cube?

We got the new DocuPrint II - C2200 Fuji Xerox Machine capable to print 12x18 maximum page size. Our mini-graphics library is equipped with design books and other references if you need to dig ideas. Of course, in-house print and web designers around - and we're still hiring by the way!

No - the company is not shutting off, but yes - we will transfer down to the first floor of the building where we are presently situated, still inside the wheels N' more compound.

Cubepixels Bajada branch will soon occupy the old Hpnotiq bar beside Bruegger's Cafe. The floor area is quite bigger than the space we are at right now - enough to accommodate more or less 15 people. I decided to transfer to a more visible and conducive-for-learning place due to my desire of pursuing the designers lounge. It will be mini-library of graphics-related material such as books and magazines I've collected for my 12 years in the industry.

Wifi Internet ready, too. Just another bright idea by Cubepixels to keep Davao graphics community alive.

My programmer-friend and I are into a new business.

Business outsourcing is undeniably one of the fastest growing industry today - and so we take the same path to where everybody walks busy through the maze of wires and fiber optic cables (my genetic days are back - well my memory is still good).

Bound to a new venture

Outbound Advertising is officially Cubepixels' partner in the outdoor advertising.

Outbound - now partly-owned and fully managed by Cubepixels Design Studio is a newly-born outdoor advertising company in the city. This is part of our expansion in the business of graphics and printing. We are now catering full services in making signs, signages, plastic build-up of its kind, flex and tarpaulin printing, sticker cut, and the list goes on.

Gateway Davao - showcase

Here's another project of mine from the Department of Tourism - Region 11.

The owner of this is a little picky yet giving sense to improve everything - of course, what can we expect from a tourism person to lure people to visit Davao.

This design project is called Gateway Davao and it aims to project the city as an infrastructure-ready beyond the notion of being just a typical hub of the south. Yes, it's a sad fact that people from the north sometimes having impression of something we don't really live with for a long time. Accessibility-wise we are ready. IT infrastructure is booming. Tourism is always on the height. I just love Davao.

Colour Index

Every time I'm in Manila, you would know where to find me quickly (not at the bars anymore!) - but to the graphic arts section of popular bookshops there at SM Megamall or in Glorieta.

Just recently, I bought this book called Colour Index by Jim Krause. I've been looking for this kind of book for a very long time until i finally found it inside the POWERBOOKS.

Graphic designers - you would love this book and I'd like to emphasize it's not only for print but web color chart, too.

Reviews on the web for this book so far is good - and I find it really indispensable since I'm into both print and the web industry. Although it's not a cheap one but spending about P1,300 for the cost of this book would give a long way to at least while my business is going.

New logo - Trellis

Trellis restaurant wants a new image that's more appealing to their market level. I made a couple of designs of various concept until we finally settled with this new logo. I've seen their new signage made of plastic build-up and it's perfectly right with the external lighting. Never had a chance to dine though =).

Pickled and Peppered - logo study

Here is another identity for a men-women shop called Pickled and Peppered - opening soon at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. Usually, I take orders of logo for the food and corporate world and it's very new to me for an RTW shops like this - however, I like how we presented it and approved in the final.

The challenge was to create a brand identity that will fit to their niche market. We were looking for something serious but not so elegant. Something that is neutral. Modern yet a little complicated. Well - that's my job and i had to deal with it.

Mc Donald's - a little trivia

I have been doing logo designs for quite some time now.

I feel the merit each time I see them wall mounted at the shops for identity - the feeling of being involved in the company's growth is something that I can't express in words. I've seen great logos around every street - those of renowned worldwide - McDonalds, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and many others.

I am keen on observing these and a little of their history.

Mc Donald’s logo – being the world’s most popular was conceived by Jim Schindler in 1962 – about 10 years after they constantly use the original speedy chef logo design.

What’s interesting about this new logo is that it was born from the architecture. The Golden Arches were actually part of the design in the structure of the building when they found out it’s good enough for the logo.

The McDonald’s name was integrated to the logo in 1968.

Kadayawan 2008 Billboard

I was tasked to develop all design collaterals for the Kadayawan 2008. Many thanks to my friends Bloggie and Maikee for endorsing me to the Kadayawan committee. This is so far the updated billboard design to be installed in all airports across the country to promote the significant festival of Davao. Photos were provided for this material.

Being this year's designer is a valued experience I can never forget.

Conjola logo

I created this logo just today. Sam Steele is developing an open-source app for Blackberry phones called ConjolaSync. With this 2nd batch of study, the logo was born - they picked 3rd design. I have to tell more shortly about what kind of application is this or how it's gonna work, ill have to fetch more information... later.

It becomes part of my routine to have logo designed everyday. The fact is - a couple of them sometimes. In the local industry, we help companies improve their advertising image through creative design - be it posters, brochure, and most importantly - Identity. I am thinking of showcasing some of the logos created for my clients and tell you something about its process, and more than that - client reactions and behavior. Well, some clients are picky while others just go with the ideas i brought for them. Some would even like me to develop about 10 studies (brain freeze afterwards!)

Hello, everyone! My name is Ray Rubio. I am a graphics designer for about than 12 years now. I manage my own business which is 4 years old already - Cubepixels Design Studio. I had a dream of setting up a cubicle (hence my blog name) for my design works - an ever-longed dream that was born in 2004 with my very first computer and few graphics programs + confidence + and perseverance to become big and put up my own team. Right now, i have 13 people working with me in design for our clients in the local and global scene.

Before i started Cubepixels, I went into teaching for 3 years in Genetic Computer School - a Singapore-based institution where I practiced my design skills and improve self-confidence through the people around me.

Well, what's with the name? Cube is my chatroom identity back in the early stage of my teaching career. Few months later, I developed my online portfolio (currently offline) to showcase what i've done for the day with my students. That routine lasted for more than 3 years and I had a chance to meet people in the industry. The rest is beautiful history to tell.
